GUWAHATI: A man was detained by Assam police on Friday night for reportedly killing a class 12 girl in the Karimganj district. The incident reportedly took place at the district's Kaliganj Dalfa village.
Monowara Begum has been identified as the victim girl. Police claimed that the accused man's residence had the girl's body lying in front of it when they arrested him.
"When we learned about the occurrence, we hurried over to the scene and discovered a body lying in front of Jabir Ahmed's home. As per witness' account, we managed to catch the accused, Jabir Ahmed. To identify the machete (dao) used by the accused, a search operation is currently underway," according to Partha Protim Das, the caretaker of police for the Karimganj area.
The motive for the suspected murder has not yet been determined. In the interim, a case was filed against the accused under the pertinent laws. More investigation is being done.
At Mankachar town, part of Assam's South Salmara-Mankachar District, a woman was allegedly slain earlier on Thursday by her own husband. The town's Kural Bhanga neighbourhood is where the incident was reported.
Identified as Farida Khatun, the woman was reportedly strangled by her husband while she was sleeping. According to sources, the accused husband, Jahanuddin, is currently on the run.
Although nothing has been proven, it is believed that the escalation was caused by infidelity on one of the two people's parts. Local police arrived at the scene in the meantime and removed the woman's body for a post-mortem. According to authorities, a manhunt has been started to find the accused husband.
On Friday night, a man was mercilessly lynched to death at Tezpur, which is part of the Sonitpur district of Assam.
According to sources, a group of at least seven persons attacked the victim, a guy named Habibur Rahman, in the Zorgorh Chariali neighbourhood.
Rahman unfortunately passed away amid the encounter, according to sources. A land-related issue is cited as the cause of the attack.
