Assam: OPD, IPD infrastucture in Tinsukia Medical College & Hospital ‘not up to mark’

TINSUKIA: Though Director of Medical Education, Assam requested the Principal-cum-Superintendent of newly-established Tinsukia Medical College & Hospital (TMC&H) to start IPD services in clinical departments from December 1 in collaboration with the Superintendent of Tinsukia Civil Hospital in view of impending inspection by National Medical Commission, the infrastructural fittings remained to be completed even in OPD section which began its services on October 1 let alone of IPD services. This posed a big challenge for Tinsukia district administration.

During a physical inspection on Thursday carried out by a team of officials that included Dr Mridul Gogoi, Superintendent of Tinsukia Civil Hospital, Chinmoy Pathak ADC (Health), Dr Rupak Gogoi Principal of TMC&H revealed that the construction company Nagarjun Construction Company Ltd (NCCL) had failed to execute the works as per specifications and perfection despite being told several times and quality of some works particularly toilets fittings of OPD section are inferior. It was also further observed that electrical points were not appropriate in almost all the rooms particularly in ICU sections.

The team have also expressed apprehensive on the centralised air conditioning system. The progress of works which was presented in PPP by the Company DGM Monoj Choudhury during inspection appears to be highly exaggerated and did not corroborate with physical verification. Talking to this correspondent, Choudhury said that the entire project would be ready by December even as essential infrastructural developments in ICUs, Surgery, Medicine etc departments depicted a very sorry state of affairs and completion within stipulated period of time appears to be a herculean task. Though the buildings viewed apparently beautiful, the inner structures would remain a matter of concern.

The planning of buildings was also faulty. According to a source, the builders had completed the construction of hostels and residential quarters and taken up the construction of medical college and hospital later, which should have been their top priority.
