Kolkata: Paramount Tea Marketing sold a batch of Assam Orthodox Specialty Teas produced by Mokalbari Tea Estate in Kolkata auctions at Rs. 22,000 per kg on August 10.

Bhansali & Company, Kolkata purchased the teas for their Russian Buyer Masterskaya of Tea.

The price fetched by the teas is the highest price received in the Kolkata auction so far.

"We have many buyers across the globe who are interested in such speciality Teas. Mokalbari, one of the top Assam Orthodox manufacturers, rarely sells such speciality teas through auctions. Our buyer is delighted to be able to purchase these teas," said Anish Bhansali, Director of Bhansali & Co.

Ajay Jalan, Director of Mokalbari Tea Estate, said they usually export such high-valued specialities to Europe directly and rarely sell through auction.

"These delicacies are handmade from a special cultivar of Tea. We are happy to receive a good response from the auction buyers and will offer more such specialities in future," he added.

Notably, Mokalbari Group has three tea estates spread over 800 hectares of land, producing two million kgs of both CTC and Orthodox varieties annually with a well-trained labour force of 1,600.

Earlier this year, a rare variety of organic tea from Assam's Golaghat district -- Pabhojan Gold Tea -- was sold for Rs 1 lakh per kg.

As per reports, this was the highest bid this year at the auction centre in Jorhat.

According to an official of Jorhat Tea Auction Center (JTAC), the tea was sold to Isha Tea which is an Assam-based tea brand by Pabhojan Organic Tea Estate.

Assam, which accounts for roughly 55 per cent of India's total tea production, has around 850 big tea estates. Besides, there are lakhs of small tea gardens owned by individuals.
