Assam: Over 20 Students Injured as Bamboo Bridge Collapses in Dhemaji District

GUWAHATI: More than 20 school students sustained injuries when a bamboo bridge over a river in Dhemaji district, Assam, collapsed. The incident occurred in the Chahbari area on the morning of October 26 as the students were attempting to cross the bridge while en route to school.

Locals rushed to the scene upon hearing the students' cries and managed to rescue them. Among the injured students, at least five are reported to be in critical condition.

The injured students are currently receiving medical treatment at the Dhemaji civil hospital in Assam.

The damages to a concrete bridge led to the locals setting up a temporary bridge for the people to cross the waterway. But an accident on the temporary bridge led to the death of one person and the injury of another on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the Seleghat locality of Mariani on the night of Wednesday. An RCC bridge in the Tengabari area was damaged around five months back so the locals were forced to construct a bamboo bridge to ensure that people could continue to cross the river. But on Wednesday night, a two-wheeler with two people onboard fell through the bridge into the ground below. The incident led to the immediate demise of one person while the other suffered severe injuries.

The person who died because of the incident was identified as Achau Bauri and the person who was injured was identified as Suren Das. He was shifted to a medical facility for better medical care.

Another accident took place on the important international highway connecting India and Bhutan led to the injury of one person. The truck involved, managed to flee from the location after committing the accident. The accident took place in the Tulasibari locality of Rangiya on the very important India - Bhutan international highway. A motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with a truck in front of the North East Bank local branch. Local people mentioned that the incident was a result of reckless driving on the part of the truck drivers plying on the road.
