Assam: Paddy Fields of Tamulpur Face Massive Attacks from Pests

TAMULPUR: A large portion of the paddy fields in the Tamulpur region of the state has been attacked by pests, causing massive problems for the local farmers of the region. The local farmers have requested the state as well as the BTR administration to look into the matter and take steps to prevent the pests from spreading further.

At a time when the paddy crop has started to grow seeds, the fields across large parts of the Tamulpur region have been attacked by hoards of pests eating through the still-growing crop and destroying the plant. Several hundred bighas of cultivated land are now facing this problem which has triggered severe tension among the farmers.

Several localities including Borbeel, Teteliguri, Kalakuchi, Amayapur, Hauli Gaon and many more localities of the Tamulpur district are now facing a severe outbreak of the pests that continue to damage crops every passing minute.

The farmers mentioned that the pests remain in hiding during the day and after sundown they spread across the plants and cause massive damage to the crop through the night. They also mentioned that they have used several pesticides, but have failed to control these pests and crops in 100s of bighas of land has been destroyed. So the farmers of the region have asked the authorities including the agriculture department of the state as well as the administration of the Bodoland Territorial Region to take steps to protect the remaining crops from this infestation.

Similar infections have been reported from the Sonitpur district as well. The fields of the Bapunipam locality of the Jamugurihat town have been attacked by pests in large numbers. These fields are now covered with greenery as the local farmers have undertaken rice cultivation in this season. Under the attack of the pests, the rice crops where the grains had just started to mature are now being destroyed by the insects.
