GUWAHATI: With the much-awaited water project of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), set to be partially commissioned by the Assam government in May, people of North Guwahati will get access to clean water on tap from next month.

This long-awaited step will coincide with the completion of the second year of the Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP state government in May.

Urban affairs minister Ashok Singhal, who had held a review meeting on the progress of the JICA-funded water supply projects in the city and its environs, said that more than 7,000 households will be covered by the drinking water project with the commissioning of the North Guwahati water project, with an installed capacity for the distribution of 37 million liters of water in a day.

The construction of the project began in 2011, with a plan to cover 17 localities in North Guwahati like the Doul Govinda temple area, Aswaklanta temple area, Amingaon, Rajadwar and Rudreswar, after completion.

Minister Singhal said,“The progress of work of both the JICA-funded water projects — North Guwahati project and the South-Central Guwahati project — is satisfactory. We have already partially commissioned the South-Central Guwahati project in December last year and we are covering more areas in a phased manner. We expect complete commissioning of the projects soon. Our department is working closely with all agencies concerned to ensure timely and successful completion of these vital projects.”

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma officially inaugurated the partial commissioning of the South-Central Guwahati project, with a capacity to distribute 191 million liters per day through taps to households. The inauguration was done in the presence of Kunihiko Kawazu, who is the deputy chief of mission, Embassy of Japan in India, and Jun Tsumori, counsellor of Embassy of Japan in India, along with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India chief SAITO Mitsunori.

in 2009, the construction of the JICA- funded South-Central Guwahati water project was started. The newly-constituted Guwahati Jal Board, which is the agency responsible for operation and maintenance of the project, is presently working to extend the potable water network to different localities to be covered under the project. The entire Gauhati East assembly constituency and parts of Guwahati West constituency and the Dispur assembly constituency will be covered, once the project is fully commissioned.
