Assam: POCSO Court Rejects Bail Pleas of Prime Accused in Guwahati Child Abuse Case

GUWAHATI: In the Guwahati child abuse case, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Court has rejected the bail pleas of Sangeeta Datta, the prime accused, and Utpala Bose, who served as her personal assistant. The court proceedings were attended by Advocate Deepa Bezbaruah, representing the prosecution. Both individuals are facing serious charges related to the alleged sexual offenses against children.

Additionally, the authorities have filed two charge sheets against Sangeeta Datta and Waliul Islam. Previously, the doctor couple faced charges under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, while Utpala Bose was accused under Section 370(5)/80 of the Child Judicial Act. As the case unfolds, legal proceedings continue against the two doctors.

On 18th July, the POCSO Court recently directed the Guwahati city police to consider handing over the seized car and keys to Dr. Sangeeta Datta's flat to her relatives, should they no longer be required for further investigation. This decision followed an application submitted by the doctor's relatives, requesting the release of the luxury car, bearing the registration number AS01 EW 7879, and the keys to her flat located in Paltan Bazar.

The application cited that several valuable items, including gold, diamonds, documents, and ornamented fish and turtles, were inside the flat. Acknowledging the request, the court instructed the police to transfer the car and flat keys to the relatives if they were deemed unnecessary for the ongoing investigation into the child abuse case.

However, as a condition for the release of the car and flat keys, the court asked the doctor's relatives to deposit an amount of Rs. 50 lakhs to the court. This measure likely serves as a guarantee to ensure cooperation and accountability in the legal process.

It is important to note that the police had seized the car and flat keys following Dr. Sangeeta Datta's arrest in connection with the child abuse case to facilitate the investigation.

The Guwahati child abuse case continues to attract attention and scrutiny as the legal system strives to ensure justice for the victims and hold the accused parties accountable for their alleged actions. As more details emerge during the proceedings, the public remains vigilant in following the developments in this case.
