GUWAHATI: In a well-coordinated operation conducted on Monday, law enforcement agencies in Assam took a significant step in combating illegal activities in the region. The Assam Police, in collaboration with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), successfully uncovered a substantial quantity of explosives while detaining a suspect in Cachar district.

The Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, revealed that this operation was initiated based on confidential information received by the authorities. A joint team comprising personnel from the Cachar district police and the 147th Battalion of CRPF carried out the operation at Silchar Kalain Road, which ultimately led to the apprehension of a 22-year-old individual named Nazim Uddin, hailing from Sundaura village.

During the operation, law enforcement officials discovered a concealed bag in Nazim Uddin's possession, which, upon inspection, yielded a shocking find. The bag contained a cache of 97 detonators and 96 fuses, indicating a potential threat that had been successfully averted by the vigilant authorities.

This operation was not an isolated incident in the ongoing efforts of Assam Police to maintain law and order in the region. On the preceding day, Sunday, another significant event took place when authorities conducted a check at the Gumrah police outpost. During this operation, they seized a truck and an SUV pickup, both found to be carrying a substantial amount of contraband - one tonne and 20 bags of illegal Burmese supari. Additionally, another individual was apprehended in connection with this incident, and legal actions are currently underway to address this illegal activity.

The discovery of illegal Burmese supari is particularly concerning, as it underscores the persistence of illicit trade in the region. Supari, or betel nut, is a popular chewable stimulant in many parts of South Asia. However, its illegal trade and consumption can lead to various social and health issues, making it a target of law enforcement agencies.

This recent operation follows a similar incident that took place on November 10 in Hailakandi district, where Assam Police seized a substantial amount of illegal Burmese supari from the residence of a 28-year-old individual named Saydul Islam Barbhuiya. In addition to the supari, a vehicle was also confiscated during the operation.

Two individuals, Abul Kalam (48) and Saydul Islam Barbhuiya (28), were apprehended during this operation conducted by the police team from Lakhinagar and Lala police stations. The operation was based on sourced information, highlighting the essential role of intelligence and collaboration in law enforcement efforts.
