SILCHAR: Cachar Police was able to arrest two accused of being involved in the trade of Burmese Areca Nut The Crime Branch of Cachar Police was able to apprehend these notorious members of the supari mafia during a raid carried out in the Cachar district.
The local police informed that the raid was carried out in the Digarkhal locality of Silchar in the night and they were presented in the Court on the next day. The identities of the accused were revealed to be Khairul Haque Talukdar and Faizur Hossain Talukdar.
The police informed that the apprehended persons were running the syndicate of Burmese Areca Nut for a very long time. They had also engaged in the transportation of the banned item by using the Kathigorah locality as a corridor in the Cachar district.
Burmese Areca Nuts and narcotics have been a major source of concern for the district admistration as well as the police force of the state.
Acting on secret information, Silchar and Karimganj police in a joint operation seized a huge quantity of heroin from a truck a few days back. The driver of the truck Shahid Ahmed, a resident of Karimganj was arrested. Cachar Police Superintendent Nomal Mahatta informed that his Karimganj counterpart Partha Pratim Das led the operation following the input that a truck loaded with narcotic substances was coming from the Champai district of Mizoram via the Bilaipur border in Hailakandi. The police team intercepted the vehicle and recovered 100 soap cases filled with heroin weighing 1.4 kg. Mahatta claimed value of the seized substances in the international market would not be less than Rs 10 crore
Cachar police had intensified vigil at Lailapur, the Cachar border with Mizoram. The drug racket had now changed its route as they were entering Barak Valley through Bilaipur in Hailakandi.
