Assam Police Battalion personnel ‘assault’ train passengers, driver at Lumding

Haflong: Several passengers, drivers and guard of Guwahati – Silchar fast passenger train were allegedly manhandled by the personnel of 1st Assam Police Battalion on the pretext of seats for them, resulting in the detention of the train for several hours on Saturday.

Hundreds of 1st APBN personnel were going to Silchar for election duty but no transportation facility provided to them. As a result, around 500 personnel forcibly entered the reservation coaches and AC coach of the train which was overcrowded by passengers from Guwahati itself. The police personnel allegedly began to assault the passengers of the reservation coaches as they refused to give seats to them. Then they allegedly manhandled the driver of the train, Uttam Das who was sent for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, few youths were trying to capture the incident on their mobile phones. Sensing a bad consequence, the unruly APBN personnel allegedly attacked these youths who received serious injuries.

The situation was so tense that no passenger dared to alight from the train for hours. People alleged indifferent attitude of the Railways towards the bonafide passengers. Total chaos prevailed at Lumding station.
