BISWANATH: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is organised on June 26 across multiple nations. It is a United Nations event to share awareness against substance abuse. Biswanath Police also undertook an initiative to commemorate the day.

As a part of the event, Biswanath Police destroyed a large quantity of different contraband materials. Large quantities of different narcotics including ganja and heroin that were captured in the region were destroyed by setting the same on fire. The narcotics confiscated by multiple police stations in the region were brought to a common place to be destroyed.

This initiative has been taken as a part of the Assam Chief Minister’s aim to completely stop the supply and consumption of narcotics. Previously a district, Biswanath had seen such destruction on seized narcotics in the past. Several key officials of the police department including the Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah, Additional Superintendent of Police Kulendra Nath Deka, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Debasish Goswami attended the event. Several key officials of the excise department were also present. According to the police reports, narcotics worth approximately Rs 1 Crore 56 lakhs 52 thousand were destroyed during this operation.

Recently the Superintendent of Police, Bhanupada Chakraborty along with the officer in charge of Churaibari Police Station Harendra Devbarma carried out a check in the region. The team was able to recover an estimated 250 kilos of dry ganja kept in 50 packets which were hidden in the vehicle. The twelve-wheeler truck carrying this consignment of narcotics is said to have borne registration number TR 01 Z1945. The driver was apprehended and the name of the 30-year-old was revealed to be Abdul Rahman, belonging to the Udaipur region which falls under the Rajdhanagar Kakrabar Region of the Gomtu district of the state.
