DIPHU: Assam Police on Monday informed that efforts are going to nab senior ACS officer Mukul Kathar, following the complaint against him of physical assault by his wife’s family members.

Addressing a press conference, Diphu Superintendent of Police (SP) informed that a team was sent to Mukul Kathar’s residence to charge him just after the complaint was registered but he was missing from his house.

The SP said, "Later we came to know that he has left Diphu and is currently staying in Guwahati. We are trying to make strategies to nab him.”

Kathar is accused of blank firing in front of his wife’s maternal home and the revolver that was used to blank fire has been seized by the police.

According to a notice on Monday, ACS Kathar has been exempted from all departments under his charge.

The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) issued a notice dated April 24 that reads, “In supersession of all the earlier Orders in this regard, the authority of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Diphu is pleased to allot the following Subjects/Departments to the Secretaries/Joint Secretaries/Deputy Secretaries/ Under Secretaries/Officers of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Secretariat with immediate effect until further orders.”

Kathar's name figures in the list included in the notice.

It is significant to note that Mukul Kathar has two FIRs registered against him. One was filed by his wife and the other by his sister-in-law.

On April 22, the senior ACS officer in Diphu, headquarters of the Karbi Anglong district in Assam, was accused of physical assault by his wife’s family members.

The senior ACS officer Mukul Kathar was accused by his wife’s elder sister of physically assaulting her.

Speaking to media persons, the elder sister alleged that at around 6.20 pm Kathar came close to her near a shop where she was inside a vehicle. He is said to have opened the door and assaulted her under the pretense of looking for his wife, Lindali Terangpi.

He was inquiring about the whereabouts of his wife and threatened of dire consequences if he didn’t find Lindali.

In addition to this, he is further accused of firing a blank from a revolver near his wife’s maternal home. Following this incident, the next day Lindali filed an FIR against him.

Moreover, Lindali’s elder sister also lodged an FIR at Diphu Police Station against her brother-in-law, ACS officer Mukul Kathar, of physical assault on the day of the above incident.

It is worth noting that Mukul Kathar was holding the important post of Secretary to the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). In addition, he was also in charge of several of the council’s important departments.
