GUWAHATI: Assam Police successfully intercepted and rescued around 50 cattle heads in the town of Jagiroad. Acting swiftly based on a tip-off, a police team managed to intercept a truck during the early hours of Saturday that was transporting the cattle from Nagaon to Guwahati. However, the driver and handyman managed to escape before they could be questioned, leaving behind a growing concern over the rampant illegal cattle smuggling plaguing the region.

Illegal cattle smuggling has become a pressing issue in recent times, with smugglers finding ways to bypass multiple police checkpoints across the state without being caught. The police have been struggling to apprehend these smugglers and unravel the methods they employ to carry out their illegal activities.

Just a few days earlier, on July 14, the police intercepted a container truck in Jorabat, which falls within both Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district and Kamrup Metropolitan district in Assam. In this operation led by Kapil Pathak, the Office in charge of Jorabat Police Station, a total of 48 cattle heads were rescued. The truck, bearing registration number 'HR 38R 7855', was en route from Jalukbari to Byrnihat in Meghalaya, carrying the smuggled cattle from an unidentified location.

Another incident unfolded in Sonapur, Assam, where the police seized a container truck after discovering 30 cattle heads inside it. Shockingly, several cows were found dead within the truck, which was traveling from the Tinsukia district in Upper Assam to Meghalaya. This distressing incident highlights the grave conditions in which these innocent animals are transported, further emphasizing the urgent need to curb such illegal activities.

The repeated instances of cattle smuggling have underscored the challenges faced by the Assam Police in tackling this issue effectively. The authorities are now intensifying their efforts to identify and apprehend the culprits behind these smuggling operations. Additionally, there is a growing demand for enhanced security measures and stricter checkpoints to deter illegal activities and ensure the safety and well-being of the cattle.

As the police work diligently to bring an end to the illegal cattle trade in Assam, it is imperative for citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to cattle smuggling. Only through collaborative efforts and a strong commitment to combat this menace can the region hope to protect its livestock and preserve its societal values.
