Guwahati: A team of Assam Police, under the directions of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has headed to Kolkata to arrest a certain Garga Chatterjee to make incendiary statements against the CM and the founder of the Ahom Dynasty, Chaolung Sukaphaa.
"A Case has already been lodged in the Crime Branch, and the Chief Minister has urged that the situation be looked into. Our team is heading to Kolkata at the behest of the Chief Minister to nab the culprit. Because the nature of the accusations is extremely serious, the Chief Minister has instructed that the culprit must be brought to book immediately", Munna Prasad Gupta, the Guwahati Police Commissioner, told The Sentinel Digital.
It needs mention here that Garga Chatterjee, a Kolkata resident, has landed in the soup after terming Chaolung Sukaphaa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, as a "Chinese invader." Taking affront at the West Bengal man's apparent insult, Bhaskar Gogoi, a resident of Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district, has filed an FIR against Chatterjee on June 18. Gogoi, an Ahom himself has called upon the Assam Government to write to the management of Twitter so that Chatterjee's account is suspended.
"He (Chatterjee) conspiringly accused Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal of celebrating Ahom Day which is in commemoration of Swargadeu Sukapha. In that tweet, he maligned Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, and tried to link it with the banned organization ULFA", Gogoi wrote in his FIR, that was filed at the Dibrugarh Police Station.
"He indirectly targeted the Ahom community as well as greater Assamese society with the blatant accusation of being Chinese invaders. These tweets coming in the wake of tense border standoff in Ladakh and general antagonism against Chinese might lead to the targeting of Assamese people in the rest of India", the FIR added.
At a time when the language, culture, and identity of Assam is seen to be under threat due to the Citizen Amendment Act, that seeks to fast-track citizenship to non-Muslim minorities from neighboring countries, these statements on social media have caused a huge uproar, with various sections of Assamese society demanding punishment for the accused.
