Guwahati: In a major development, Assam police on Thursday apprehended 12 alleged Jihadis, with links to the Bangladesh-based terror group Ansarul Islam.
Besides this, Seven others, suspected to be linkmen of the same outfit were also nabbed in the Morigoan district.
Reportedly, of these 12 jihadis, 10 were nabbed from various areas of Barpeta district, while one was taken into custody from Guwahati.
One of these nabbed Jihadis was allegedly running the Jami-ul- Huda Madrassa in the state's Morigaon district.
He was identified as Mufti Mustafa who is reportedly the head of Jamiulhuda Madrassa in Moribari.
As per reports, a team of state police carried out a search operation at the Madrassa and other residences in Moribari on Wednesday night and nabbed him.
The police have also seized several documents including a bank passbook and mobile phones from Mustafa's possession.
''Mufti Mustafa, was allegedly involved in various financial transactions and anti-national activities linked to Ansarul Islam, which is affiliated with a larger outfit Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS),'' Morigaon district police chief Aparna Natarjan said.
It has also come to the fore that Mustafa was in close contact with Amiruddin Ansari of the Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team.
Meanwhile, speaking on the same, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta asserted that the militant organizations are gradually trying to target Assam.
''They are trying to provoke Muslim youths of the state by entering the state via Bangladesh,'' he added.
