Guwahati: Police Shoot and Injure Two Suspected Thieves

GUWAHATI : Amidst the ongoing theft and robbery incidents in the city, Guwahati police allegedly had to open fire at two suspected thieves on 23rd of December, Friday. The incident reportedly took place in Geetanagar and the accused has been identified as Mukesh Kumar and Gaurav Paul. 

Both of them sustained bullet injuries after getting shot by the police. As per the reports, both the accused tried to escape from custody as a result of which the police had resort to open firing. However, they were immediately admitted in the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for their treatment. 

The suspected thieves, however, reportedly stated that they were brought to the police station for questioning and that they were sitting and not attempting to escape when the police deliberately opened fire on them.

GMCH officials stated that the injured will be discharged from the hospital after completion of their treatment. 

With the growing ratio of crimes in the city, Diganta Borah, the Commissioner of Police, urged everybody to trust the administration. The department is taking all the necessary to measures to eradicate the crime scenario.

The Guwahati Commissioner of Police on Friday said that the term  encounter did not exist in the language of police and  the police sometimes have to take certain steps within the limits of law. He said this in connection to the shooting of two suspected thieves at Geetanagar Police Station.

Borah said, "There is no such term as encounter in police language and whatever is needed to arrest the culprits are done. Sometimes we have to take certain extreme steps within the limit of law."

He also explained that both the thieves were involved in several robbery incidents such as snatching gold chains, mobile phones and so on.

It was also stated that the police have recovered several stolen items from thieving duo.

Many, however, opined that the police did it out of frustration as they are being unable to apprehend the criminals roaming free in the city and committing more daring crimes everyday.
