Assam Police Personnel Face BMI Tests After Weight Reduction Deadline

GUWAHATI: In a bid to enhance the health and fitness levels of its personnel, Assam Police is set to conduct Body Mass Index (BMI) tests after the completion of a three-month weight reduction deadline. The initiative, directed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to ensure the overall well-being of police personnel, including Indian Police Service (IPS) and Assam Police Service (APS) officers who fall under the obese category.

Following the issuance of strict instructions on May 16, all police personnel were given a three-month period to achieve weight reduction. This directive prompted officers to focus on their fitness and health, marking a significant step toward a more robust police force.

As part of the evaluation process, BMI tests will be held at each district headquarters, including the Kamrup (Metro) district. The 4th Assam Police Battalion (APBn) premises in Guwahati's Kahilipara will be the venue for BMI testing in the Kamrup (Metro) district. This initiative not only underscores the commitment of the Assam Police top brass to the well-being of their officers but also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle within law enforcement.

Director General of Assam Police (DGP) GP Singh has further elaborated on the weight reduction strategy. Police personnel categorized as obese, with a BMI of 30 or higher, will be granted an additional three months to actively work on their weight reduction goals, extending the deadline until the end of November. This provision highlights the organization's consideration for genuine medical conditions that might hinder weight loss efforts, such as hypothyroidism.

However, for officers who fail to meet the weight reduction targets within the stipulated timeframes, the Assam Police has announced the possibility of offering a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). This measure is aimed at maintaining the physical fitness standards required for effective law enforcement operations, while also providing an alternative for officers who might find it challenging to achieve weight reduction.

In summary, the Assam Police's weight reduction initiative showcases a proactive approach to enhancing the health and fitness of its personnel. Through BMI tests and targeted weight reduction efforts, the police force is striving to set an example of disciplined well-being, ultimately contributing to more effective law enforcement and improved overall quality of life for officers.
