Guwahati:
Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said on Wednesday that police officers will now work an eight-hour shift.
Furthermore, the police department will operate in two shifts to alleviate employee workload.
The DGP stated during a news conference on speeding up investigations and resurrecting the police force that Assam Police is undergoing a huge makeover and would soon be revived.
The press conference came after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with the state's SPs earlier today and brainstormed on several problems for efficient investigations.
The Chief Minister tweeted, "Prudent policing is vital for good governance. Glad to be joining SPs of @assampolice at a day long deliberation to review law & order and brainstorm on internal issues, and firm up robust strategies for their handling including efficient investigations".
DGP Mahanta also stated that ten commando battalion teams will be established in the state, as well as an increase in the number of civil police personnel.
The system will be expanded to include 23,000 civil police officers and 12,000 commando police officers.
The council also decided that police quarters would be built with the well-being of police officers in mind.
In relation to the operation against rhino poaching in Kaziranga, DGP Mahanta stated that the police force will be tough in taking action against poachers in the region and is adopting long-term efforts to stop wildlife poaching in the state.
