Assam: Police Rescue Gibbons From Karbi Anglong, 2 Held

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police saved two gibbons and detained two people in connection with this in the Karbi Anglong area of Assam. 

 The gibbons were saved after an interception of a truck on Sunday in Bokajan. 

The truck was allegedly unlawfully transporting the threatened species from Manipur through Karbi Anglong, according to the authorities.

The truck that was confiscated has the licence plate AS-01 PC-3927. In the meantime, police detained two people in relation to the incident.

Mohammad Waris and Naowa Meitei, both Imphal locals, are the two smugglers who have been detained. The gibbons were turned over to the forest department, according to information provided by the police.

Further inquiry into the situation has been initiated.

Rare animal species were saved from the clutches of smugglers in Guwahati last month. One tiger cub and two golden jackals were recovered from the Kamakhya Railway Station. 

The animals, according to sources, were saved from the Lokmanya Tilak Express. In relation to this incident, one individual was detained.

According to reports, the animals were being shipped from Mumbai to Guwahati.

Assam Rifles busted another racket of smuggling and illegal trading of exotic animals in the state of Mizoram. Sercchip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the supervision of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (east), recovered and seized six Burmese Python snakes. The seizure was made in Mizoram’s Zokhawthar district on 16 February, Thursday.

Based on a prior secretive information, a team was formed by Assam Rifles which later initiated a search operation in the area. Furthermore, the AR team arrested four persons in connection with the illegal smuggling.

These individuals were sent for an interrogation process with the authorities in order to extract out more information about the matter. Nevertheless, the recovered exotic snakes were handed over to the Champhai Forest Department. 

Five consignments from Imphal were seized by the Jorabat police on Tuesday, 6th of December 2022. As per the reports, the consignments were travelling to Gujarat via Meghalaya. The shipment comprised of several boxes, inside which there were exotic species of reptiles.
