Guwahati: 444 bags of urea fertiliser have been confiscated by the Assam Police from the Nagarbera Bazar area in Kamrup district on May 23.
Acting on information received from locals, a search operation was carried out by the police in the market area and they found the urea fertiliser bags that was hidden near a river and subsequently seized it.
Officials said that as many as 444 bags of urea fertiliser were seized near the Jaljali river.
The police have said that they contacted the Agriculture Department and handed over the seized fertiliser bags. The police have claimed that the seized fertiliser bags belonged to a detained businessman.
The police have added that the Crime Investigation Department has launched a probe to look into the matter and the police is in contact with the CID. The police concluded by saying that they shall act in accordance with the law.
Earlier, Assam police had announced suitable rewards for inputs leading to pilferage of fertilisers with district police or at higher levels.
Assam top cop, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, an IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, tweeted that all district SPs and Range Officers of Assam Police had been advised to hold meetings with fertiliser, dealers/wholesalers and transporters and take ruthless and immediate actions to ensure that fertiliser allowed for Assam farmers isn't pilfered or stolen.
He also added that anyone who has information regarding this should immediately share it with Assam police, district police or at any higher levels. He/she will be specially recognised and rewarded.
Around nine people were captured by Cachar Police along with eight drivers and snatched 8,476 bags of fertilisers that were illegally transported from the main office.
