Guwahati: Following the cancellation of the exams for the recruitment of SI (sub-inspectors) in the Police department on Sunday after question paper leaks on WhatsApp, the chairman of the State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB), Assam, has said that the new dates for the written examinations shall be announced within one month.

"The new dates of the written exam will be declared within the next one month. The candidates are once more assured that the examinations will be free and fair and hence they should continue with the preparations," the SLPRB's Assam chairman said in a release issued on Monday (September 21).

The written test for the recruitment of 597 Sub Inspectors (SIs) in the Assam Police was canceled on Sunday minutes after it had commenced across the State, leaving thousands of applicants in the lurch. They have expressed anger and anguish over the incident.

This shocking incident has also been condemned by several students' organizations. The Assam unit of the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), the BJP's student unit, while lamenting that this is sure to backfire on the students, has condemned the incident and demanded justice.

In a statement issued to the media by State ABVP secretary Rakesh Das on Sunday, the students' body raised the demand for a high-level inquiry into the incident and exemplary punishment to the culprits.

Meanwhile, Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has instructed the DGP (Director General of Police) to apprehend the culprits. "The CM instructed the DGP to identify the nexus, which conspired to spoil the recruitment process, and give strict punishment as soon as possible," said a statement from the Chief Minister's Office.

At the same time, an FIR has been filed with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assam, to take legal action against the culprits responsible for the leak of the papers.
