GUWAHATI: In a bid to clear speculations surrounding unnatural deaths in the state, all the Superintendents of Police of the respective districts of Assam have been directed to reopen cases of unnatural deaths. The SPs of the districts have also been asked to investigate the matter.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this while addressing the media at CM's conference room at the Janata Bhawan on Friday.

Shedding light on the recent CID investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a minor girl in Dhula of Darrang District, CM Sarma briefed on how the Special Investigation Team re-examined the entire case.

In the prior investigation conducted by the police, the matter was labelled as suicide.

The Assam Chief Minister further said that through the findings of the CID's Special Investigation Team, the Government desires to send a strong message to those working in the police, judicial and medical departments to work sincerely in accordance with the law.

CM Sarma also mentioned about the inaccuracy of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for the cases of unnatural deaths.

"It will be difficult to rely on the NCRB data as there will be cases of unnatural deaths caused by floods also, however, I have asked the SPs to re-open all such cases which have been claimed to be suicide and have grey areas," the Assam CM said.

On the modus operandi for investigating the cases of unnatural deaths in the future, the Chief Minister stated that the DIGs and SPs of the jurisdiction will be visiting the sites in person. Only when they are satisfied with the investigation, such a case of unnatural death will be closed.

CM Sarma said, "Any case which has been claimed to be suicide or any case of accident or murder presented as suicide will be re-visited."

On the activity of the state police on various social media platforms, CM Sarma said that the team is very active, however it is totally up to the police on how effectively they are able to react to an urgency.
