GOALPARA: The Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) has demanded permanent and scientific protection of the Baladmari char of Goalpara district from the erosion of the Brahmaputra River. A team of APYC under the supervision of general secretary Rakesh Chakravorty on Monday submitted a memorandum at the Goalpara DC's office with the demand for protection of the char, besides rehabilitation and compensation to the victim families. The team had earlier visited the erosion site and exchanged views with the local people. "The Baladmari char needs urgent protection, especially because that it is adjacent to Goalpara town. If we fail to protect the char, the erosion will severely affect the town," said Rakesh Chakravorty. "A multi-crore porcupine style protection was taken up recently under the signature project of the government to save the area but the local people has alleged misappropriation in the scheme," added Chakravorty.
