Assam: Pranabjit Chaliha cremated with full state honours

SIVASAGAR: Seventy-three-year-old social activist and a leader of the Assam Andolan, Pranabjit Chaliha, popularly known as Ramu da, who passed away on Wednesday at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, was cremated with full state honours on Thursday. His last rites were performed at the Phukan Nagar crematorium, Sivasagar.

Bitupan Neog, District Development Commissioner, Sivasagar represented the State Government at the cremation. Chaliha’s son Shrinkhal Chaliha carried out the last rites.

Earlier in the day many organizations and individuals paid their last respects to the mortal remains of Chaliha. According to family sources, Pranabjit Chaliha had been suffering from lung disease for a long time and was undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh from September 1, where he breathed his last.

Born on April 2, 1950, in Sivasagar, Pranabjit was a leading leader in the Assam Andolan. Chaliha had also contested assembly elections from Sivasagar constituency in 2001, 2006 and 2011.
