GUWAHATI: With less than a week left for the upcoming Magh Bihu, preparations are underway across the state to celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm. While some people are busy constructing Bhela Ghar to celebrate the Uruka night, others are busy making delicious larus and pithas.

People from different parts of the state have taken their own initiates regarding the festival. The residents of the Milanpur village of Raha have created their Bhela Ghar in the likes of the Maha Mritunjay Temple of Puranigudam. The structure has been created mainly with bamboo and straw. The almost 50-foot-tall structure has been created by the youth of six villages - Dighaldari, Pohupuri, Kakati Gaon, Adarsha Gaon, Milanpur and Na-Kakati Gaon. “We have decided to build the bhela ghar on this temple to give a picture to the people of our village who have neither seen nor visited it yet, " they said.

And Sipajhar of Mangaldai is also no exception. People are making Bhela Ghars to host the feast on Uruka night. People of Borongabari have constructed a boat-shaped Bhela Ghar and plan to celebrate the feast with friends, family and neighbours.

While the men are busy constructing Bhela Ghars and Bhela Pujis, womenfolk are busy preparing a wide variety of pitha for the festive season. Some women of the Kakojan Village of Teok are preparing huge consignments of pitha-ladu etc. These are then packed into boxes to be sold in the Bihu special markets.

In the capital city of Guwahati, seasonal markets have come up in various locations including Khanapara, Ambari, District Library, etc to sell Bihu special food items like various types of laru or laddus and pitha. These markets have also stacked up other necessary items like dairy products, varieties of rice, jaggery, sesame etc for the customers of the city.
