Assam: Private Institutes Cannot Hike Fees Without State Govt Approval

GUWAHATI: Private Institutes in Assam from now on cannot hike the fees according to their will and will have to ask for the state government's approval for the same.

This step has been taken by the Government of Assam after a slew of complaints emerged from certain private institutes hiking their fees without any notice.

The Assam government has taken this step in order to give some relief to the families who are already recovering from the covid-induced economic crisis.

Some private institutes in order to cover the loss they incurred during the two years of Covid-induced turmoil in the country hiked their fees which infuriated the students and some of them even filed complaints against this malpractice of private institutes.

The Assam government came in support of these students and tightened its grip on the private institutes that are running a business out of education.

According to reports, from now on the private institutes if wanted to hike their fees will have to consult the 'Fee Regulatory Committee set up by the state government to monitor all the finances happening in private institutes so that these institutes cannot harass the students with skyrocketing fees.

Private Institutes in Assam will now have to notify the fee structure in each academic year and they will have to submit a report to the Fee Regulatory Committee before finalizing the fee structure. If the Fee Regulatory Committee thinks that the fee structure is too much for a student's family to bear, it will have the authority to change it to a much more suitable one after a discussion with its panel of experts.

It is to be noted here that a few months ago The Delhi government decided to raise the fees of the diploma-level technical institutes run and owned by private organizations in Delhi but the Lt.Governor of Delhi rejected the proposal and said, "There are lakhs of aspiring youth who were unable to get admission in the well-known 'Delhi Model of Education' institutions and are forced to go to private institutions. Therefore, this decision will benefit their families and students."
