DIBRUGARH: After being brought to Dibrugarh central jail in Assam, the elusive pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh has been placed under solitary confinement in the jail.

After a month- long cat and mouse chase, Punjab police arrested the absconding Amritpal Singh from Moga district in the state on Sunday (April 23), although reports suggested he had surrendered. The radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh has been booked under the national security act (NSA).

Singh was brought to the Dibrugarh jail in Assam and later confined in an isolated cell in Dibrugarh jail, away from his nine associates, who had been brought earlier in batches.

His nine associates have also been booked under NSA.

Notably, Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates are the only prisoners booked under the NSA lodged in the Dibrugarh jail.

He was flown to Dibrugarh in Assam in a special flight from the Bhatinda air force station after his arrest by the Punjab police on Sunday (April 23).

Speculation is rife regarding the exact reason behind the transit of Amritpal Singh to Dibrugarh in Assam.

It is believed that the aspect of safety and security at the Dibrugarh jail in Assam is one of the prime reasons for bringing Amritpal Singh to Assam.

The British-era Dibrugarh jail in Assam is the oldest jail in entire Northeast, which was built in 1859-60.

It is also considered to be the most secure prison in Assam and was used to hold top leaders of the ULFA during the outfit’s peak time.

According to reports, the Punjab government had first thought of sending Amritpal and his aides to Delhi’s Tihar jail, but due to the fact that the Delhi prison houses many Punjabi gangsters and even separatists, it was decided to send them to Assam.

It will be difficult for any prisoner to escape from the jail owing to the strict security arrangements already in place in the jail since decades, it is said.

Moreover, recently the Dibrugarh jail in Assam has been upgraded into a super maximum security prison.

Round-the-clock security is provided by CRPF personnel and commandos of the Assam police guarding the jail, it was stated.
