Assam: Protest erupts in Demow against delimitation of Thowra constituency

DEMOW: Demow Chariali witnessed a strong demonstration on Tuesday as local organisations, political parties, and the public of Thowra constituency rallied against the delimitation of their historic constituency. Protesters brandished placards and chanted slogans expressing their dissatisfaction with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain, and the BJP. To ensure security, police presence was heightened in Demow Chariali since Tuesday morning.

Jadab Gogoi, president of Asomiya Yuba Mancha (AYM) Central Committee, addressed the media during the protest, stating their firm rejection of the delimitation draft. Gogoi claimed that in the draft, Thowra constituency was renamed Demow constituency.

Sumeet Kumar Handique, general secretary of ATASU in Sivasagar district, also expressed disappointment over the delimitation of the historic Thowra constituency. Handique accused the government of being anti-indigenous peoples and specifically targeting the Ahom community. He further questioned the chief minister’s commitment to protecting indigenous peoples. Handique criticised Sushanta Borgohain, the elected MLA representing Thowra, for his silence on the matter.

Binod Konwar, general secretary of the Congress party in Sivasagar district, also voiced criticism against Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain. The protest witnessed the participation of local organisation leaders, political party leaders, and members of the public.
