Assam: Protesters Carries Dead Body, Blocks NH 17 After Man Killed in Land Mafia Attack

GUWAHATI: The death of a man from Assam turned sour after agitated locals on Saturday blocked the National Highway 17 at Beltoli in the Bilasipara area.

According to reports, the deceased Sapiluddin Sheikh was brutally thrashed by a gang with sticks, rods and sharp weapons when he tried to prevent the attack from land mafias from Char areas.

Although Sheikh was rushed to a nearby hospital, he was later transferred to Bongaigaon for medical treatment following which he was shifted to GNRC hospital in Guwahati.

Sheikh later succumbed to his injuries on Friday night.

As the news of Sheikh's death spread like wildfire, the All Assam Garia Maria Deshi Jatiya Parishad, Desi Janagosthi Chhatra Manch, Nath Yogi Students' Union and other party organizations, including local citizens blocked National Highway 17 by carrying the body of the deceased on the road near Beltoli intersection on Saturday.

It is to be mentioned here that locals alleged that even after the incident, the OC of Bilaspara police station didn't arrest a single culprit in connection to the incident.

The chaos in turn led to a massive traffic jam wherein hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of National Highway 17 amid a road blockade by the agitated public.

Earlier this month, the people of Banglipara came out to protest against the suspicious death of a newly-wedded woman named Jerifa Khatun.

The protestors demanded the capital punishment of the person involved in Jerifa's alleged murder.

It may be mentioned that Jerifa was found hanged to death on August 4 at her in-laws' house. Jerifa, a resident of Kumullipara, got married to one Baharul Islam of Banglipara in Jania of the Barpeta district almost 10 months ago.

The family members of Jerifa said that Baharul was involved in an illicit relationship with a relative and when Jerifa came to know about it, she was murdered.
