GUWAHATI: Several organisations took to protesting against the education department of the state of Assam due to the reported leaking of the question papers and the subsequent cancelling of the General Science paper for the High School Leaving Certificate Examinations.
There were multiple reports of the paper being shared over social media and messaging platforms on Sunday, a day ahead of the exam scheduled to take place on March 13. Following this development, the education minister of the state ordered the postponement of the subject to a later date.
“General Science examination of the ongoing HSLC examination scheduled for 13/03/2023 has been cancelled by SEBA in view of media reports of leakage of the question paper. The next date will be announced in due course,” announced the education minister of Assam Ranoj Pegu. This tweet came at about midnight of Monday.
The Board of Secondary Education of Assam is responsible for the hosting of the High School Leaving Certificate Examinations, also called the Metric Exam which marks the end of high school. There were reports of other subject question papers including the General English paper, but it was denied by the department.
Protests against this incident started in the early morning of Monday across the state of Assam. The All Assam Students Union led the protests at multiple locations. Effigies of the education minister Ranoj Pegu and the Board of Secondary Education of Assam were burnt in several parts of the state along with sloganeering.
The opposition Indian National Congress led the protests in the Assam legislative assembly. The morning session of Monday during the ongoing budget session had to be adjourned because of the protests.
“We have a belief that such news may create confusion in the minds of the candidates and keeping in view of this, the examination of General Science (C3) subject, which is to be held on 13 March 2023 (Monday) is hereby cancelled,” the notification mentioned.
Assam DGP later tweeted that a case has been registered regarding the incident and CID Assam will be investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, a large number of students were not aware of the cancellation of the examination as the announcement came late at night. They arrived at their respective examination centres and took up protests regarding the matter.
