A huge public meeting was held at the Pathsala Harimandir premises on Thursday under the banner of Bajali Zilla Suraksha Samiti to strongly protest the government’s decision to degrade the Bajali district status to sub-district.

PATHSALA: A huge public meeting was held at the Pathsala Harimandir premises on Thursday under the banner of Bajali Zilla Suraksha Samiti to strongly protest the government’s decision to degrade the Bajali district status to sub-district. The meeting was chaired by advocate Giridhar Choudhury and a large number of aggrieved people attended the meeting. The meeting adopted various resolutions unanimously and demanded to start the functioning of the various district-level administrative works from September 17.

On August 17, the Governor of Assam vide ECF No 367433/8 declared the district status of Bajali comprising the new Bajali LAC and Bhawanipu-Sorbhog LAC. It was also announced that the former Bajali district was enlarged with the inclusion of Sorbhog and Barpeta Road etc. area.

The protest meet further resolved to register a protest against the decision in various places of the district if the government failed to fulfil their demand. The meeting also decided to call a10-hour Bajali bandh from 6AM to 4 PM on September 20. In another resolution, the meeting decided to boycott the programme of the MLAs and ministers from the beginning of Durga Puja if their demand was not fulfilled. It was also resolved to block the national highway and Railway line as part of an agitation programme to demand a full-fledged Bajali district. Meanwhile, a large number of citizens came to the protest meet from Sorbhog and Howly with a bike rally showing placards in support of the Bajali district which was declared earlier. People expressed their dissatisfaction and flooded the social media with messages criticizing the decision and termed the decision as injustice to the people of the area.
