RANGIYA: A protest was carried out in Rangiya against the Assam Power Distribution Committee Limited for the irregular supply as well as the exorbitant charges of electricity in the state. The protesters also engaged in sloganeering against the electricity board as well as the local member of the legislative assembly.

The people of the region complained that the Number 2 Sub-Division of the electrical department in Rangiya was unable to provide regular electrical supply to the region and it has become a massive headache for the people in this heat. Adding that the region was facing several hours of power cuts in recent days. They also mentioned that the number of transformers put in by the concerned authorities was much lesser than the requisite number and for that, even when there is electricity, the voltage keeps on fluctuating.

This fluctuating voltage and power cuts have become a huge problem for the local people, especially for children and senior citizens. The heat has also put the local people at risk of medical conditions mentioned by the protesters.

People from the Udiyana village including their women and children staged the protest against the electricity board as well as the MLA. The protesters complained that they had complained several times regarding these problems, but the officials paid no heed to their complaints.

It is important to note that Bhabesh Kalita, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Assam represents the Rangiya Constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The All Assam Electricity Consumers’ Association (AAECA) has opposed the APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd.) levying additional charges at the rates of Rs 0.30 for LT (low tension) Jeevan Dhara and LT domestic consumers and Rs 0.70 for all other categories for three months: May, June, and July. The APDCL is charging the additional levy in terms of the AERC (Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment) Regulations, 2010, Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA).
