Assam: Public Protest Against Eviction of Agricultural Land by Government

Margherita: The members of the All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students Union staged a protest against the eviction carried out by the state government in the Arunudoi Sonowal Village in Namfai of Jagun. Representatives of other organisations also participated in this protest.

The protest against the eviction of agricultural land was staged at the gates of the office of the circle officer of the Margherita Circle. The protesters took out a rally from Margherita Rangamancha and reached the circle office where they staged the protest. The protesters submitted a 4-point memorandum regarding the protest to the circle officer via the public relations officer of the district.

The key points in the memorandum included the demand for an immediate halt to the eviction process, making arrangements for a meeting between the administration and the representative of the Sonowal Kachari community, a complete halt on the allocation of land to other parties till the existing people of the village get a solution to the land related issues and to ensure the well being of the livestock which have been affected because of the eviction process. The protesters also mentioned that they will increase the protests if these demands are not met.

As per the orders of the state government, actions have been undertaken towards the clearing of the government land illegally occupied by encroachers. To that effect, eviction was carried out in Namfai which falls under the Lekhapani Police Station of the Tinsukia District of the state on June 16. It is important to note that these people were established in this region by the previous government. The eviction process led to a clash between the locals and the authorities, which later came into control.

It was important to note that in 1999, the Congress government relocated a large number of landless people on the banks of the Namsik River near the Jagun region.
