Assam: Public Protest Against Irregular Power Supply

LUMDING: Despite charging a lot, the people of some regions of the state are unable to receive uninterrupted power supply and this has been the reason for the anger of many people across the state. Recently protests were staged in the Lumding region of the state against the same problem.

Protesting against the power department, the local people of Lumding pointed out that they received power for only 3-4 hours out of 24 hours a day. The scorching heat and the lack of electric power supply had triggered the anger of the people.

And the local people took to the streets and thereafter gheraoed the local office of the power department in Lumding. A large number of enraged men and women also took to sloganeering against the power department as well as the state government for their inability to provide the service. The people also complained that the electricity bill amounts have increased drastically in recent times and the department disconnects the line even if there is a small delay in payment of the bills, but they can not ensure power supply for even half the day.

Amidst the promise of the State Government to supply power 24x7 across the State, due to acute shortage of power as well as frequent load shedding of electricity in Nagaon town as well for over a fortnight here, an irate mob of locals went on a rampage on Saturday night and gheraoed the Haibargaon power sub-station for over hours. During the stir, the irate mob shouted various slogans against the officials of Nagaon APDCL as well as the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer of Nagaon APDCL here. The irate mob alleged that the on-duty official of the power sub-station allegedly neglected his duty. Most of the time, in a drunken state, he frequently cuts off the power supply for hours without reason any and often fails to reconnect the power supply in the areas after hours.
