Assam: Public Transport To Get Costlier By 60-70%, Transport Body Demands Increase In Fare

Guwahati: After skyrocketing prices of almost all essential commodities, including petrol and diesel, bus fares may go up as the All Assam Motor Transport Association has written a letter to the Transport Commissioner seeking a 60-70 percent fare hike.

In the letter, the Transport Association has mentioned the increase in all taxes on transporters, including toll tax which has been raised by 15 percent since April 1.

''In such a situation the country's transport industry has reached its death. The sick transport industry, which offers 35 percent tax cuts in the exchequer, has come up with the need to take steps to address the crisis,'' the letter read.

In the letter, the Transport Association has also reminded that the Assam government had issued a 25 percent fare hike notice in 2019.

As per the proposed fare hike, now passengers will have to pay a minimum of Rs 17 when they board a city bus in Guwahati city.
