GUWAHATI: Noted farmer from Gohpur, Pulimai Kutum Pegu was named the best farmer at the Assam International Agri-Horti Show 2023.

The 37-year-old farmer had been given the award for her contributions towards the agri and allied sectors, especially for her work in the rearing of silkworms. She had planted 500 saplings of Keseru trees in the Gohpur region. She used the same to rear silkworms and managed to achieve self-sustainability through the same.

It was mentioned that Pulimai Kumtum Pegu extracts the silk by hand and earns around Rs 1 lakh from the same. Keeping this achievement in mind, the state government has decided to honour her with the award of the best farmer. She is engaged in processing the eri silk at home which she uses to weave clothes. She has been selling these clothes made of hand-made silk to make a living and inspiring others to do the same.

Meanwhile, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Assam and the Assam Live Stock and Poultry Corporation Limited have organised the 4th Livestock and Poultry Fair, which was flagged off by the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary for the Government of Assam, Atul Bora, at the livestock farm playground in Khanapara on Friday. In the inaugural speech, the minister mentioned the growing interest of the youth in this sector, pointed out that many of them have achieved success because of it, and added that there is still a lot of scope in this sector. He said that this can be achieved by using scientific processes and the commercially viable implementation of the same.

Speaking on the occasion, the chairman of the Assam Live Stock and Poultry Corporation, Manoj Saikia, said that one of the main ideas behind this fair is to promote the livestock and poultry sector as a profit-making industry, adding that this event encourages around 10,000 new people every year to join the sector, and as of now, a large number of educated youth have been able to excel in various avenues of this field and successfully establish themselves as entrepreneurs and mentors.
