Assam: Rally Taken Out to Encourage the Use of Green Crackers

MANGALDAI: The Festival of Lights is just around the corner and so is the risk of a massive increase in pollution levels. One of the ways to mitigate this problem is the usage of green firecrackers and the same was encouraged by a rally in Mangaldai.

A massive rally was carried out in the Mangaldai town on Friday to spread awareness regarding the ill effects of fireworks with the aim to promote the use of Green Fireworks. The rally was organised under the initiative of the Malgaldai Municipal Board. Hundreds of local women took part in this initiative as the rally passed through the heart of the city to spread awareness among as many people as possible.

Multiple leaders also took part in this rally including the Member of Parliament for the Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency, Dilip Saikia, former Member of Legislative Assembly Gurujyoti Das the chairperson of Mangaldai Municipal Board Nirmali Devi. The rally was flagged at the municipality office as it processed on the L N B Road to return back to the point of start.

The participants aimed to make the local people aware of the problems emitted by loud fireworks. They also displayed placards showing the ill effects along with messages like stop sound pollution, stop air pollution, use only green crackers and save the environment.

Previously, in a press conference held in Guwahati, Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah urged the residents to revel in the festivities of Diwali and Kali Puja while strictly adhering to guidelines set by the administration. Barah emphasized that disobedience of the prescribed rules would be dealt with sternly. Expressing optimism about the enthusiastic celebration of the festivals, Barah highlighted the importance of following guidelines established by the Supreme Court and Kamrup district administration. He specifically addressed the ban on crackers containing barium nitrate, permitting only the use of green crackers as defined by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
