Assam: Reep Hazarika Appointed as New State Information Commissioner (SIC)

GUWAHATI: Reep Hazarika has been designated as the State Information Commissioner (SIC) for Assam, according to a notification released on September 27 by the state Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria. In this capacity, Hazarika will serve within Assam's Information Commission.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new Information Commissioner is scheduled to take place at the Raj Bhawan and will be officiated by Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Thursday.

Reep Hazarika brings with him a distinguished career in the oil refining and petrochemical industry, spanning over three decades. His professional journey includes roles at prominent organizations such as the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Numaligarh Refinery Limited, and Bharat Oman Refineries Limited.

Hazarika's educational background includes schooling at St. Edmunds School, Shillong, followed by an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering (Honours) from the esteemed Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani.

Throughout his career, Hazarika has contributed across various functions, including operations, technical services, projects, planning and programming, environment management, corporate affairs, and IMS/ISRS protocol implementation. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the successful commissioning of two prestigious Assam Accord projects: the Assam Accord Refinery and the Assam GasCracker Project (formerly known as NRL and BCPL, respectively).

Prior to assuming the role of Managing Director at Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), Hazarika served as the Chief General Manager at BCPL, overseeing the overall operation and maintenance of the plant since 2016.

Reep Hazarika's extensive experience and background in the petrochemical sector position him well to assume the responsibilities of the State Information Commissioner in Assam.

It may be noted that earlier in March this year, Reep Hazarika, Managing Director of BCPL, was felicitated with the ‘Innovation Leadership Awards 2023’. The award ceremony was held on Thursday in Guwahati. The North East Innovation Leadership Awards was presented by the Asian Confederation of Businesses with World Innovation Congress as its strategic partner and Stars of the Industry Group as a research partner.
