Assam: Renaming of Mangaldai Lok Sabha constituency opposed

MANGALDAI: In a sit-in protest programme, in front of the District Library, Mangaldai, a large number of protesters expressed strong resentment against the recent proposal of State Cabinet to the Election Commission of India regarding renaming of the Mangaldai Lok Sabha constituency as the Bhairabkunda Lok Sabha constituency. Earlier, in the draft notification published by the Delimitation Committee on June 20, it was proposed to rename Mangaldai Lok Sabha Constituency as Darrang Lok Sabha Constituency.

The protest demonstration organized by Darrang Lok Sabha Constituency Demand Committee was participated by more than two hundred representatives of several social non political organizations including the Darrang District Committee of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani, Goria Moria Deshi Jatiya Parishad, elected public representatives, senior citizens, women activists and others have demanded immediate withdrawal of the State Cabinet decision and retain the name of Darrang Lok Sabha Constituency as published in the draft notification of the Delimitation Committee keeping in mind the glorious history, rich heritage and significant geographical location of Darrang founded by king Boli Narayan of the royal Koch dynasty in the year 1614. Mangaldai legislator Basanta Das also took part in the protest demonstration. Later two public petitions in this regard were submitted separately to the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary of the State through Darrang district administration.
