Silchar: The ushering in of the new year is of renewed pledge for Assam Rifles for continued social participation in the greatest interest of the largest target groups of people living in rural areas. And this has been the effort of the great and watchful sentinel of northeast. 2020 was the year of achievements and The Sentinel provided space to highlight them. During the end of last week of the by gone year, the Assam Rifles' civic action programme has been quite significant. The Kadamtala Battalion of Assam Rifles attached with 21 sector and Inspector General (East) constructed and handed over a water storage tank to villagers of new Kaiphundai in the Tamenlong district of Manipur. The village faces extreme scarcity of water and the water tank will alleviate the problem and help the villagers improve their quality of life.
Another notable move of the Assam Rifles has been to organise COVID-19 awareness camp at Harinagar in the district of Cachar as a part of its awareness programme. The message conveyed through awareness is to alert the people that the threat of the pandemic has not fully subsided and even after the vaccination, one has to be cautious. Already the dreaded disease has taken a different shape with a new strain. 35 people from different villages attended the camp.
On the holy Christmas, Assam Rifles personnel visited eight churches and presented gifts and cakes to the villagers while celebrating the birth day of Jesus. The event was to reach out to villagers for better and cordial relations. This holistic approach was to pave way for peace and goodwill in the once trouble torn zone hit by insurgency. Apart from that, a joint coordination meet with security forces that included Manipur Rifles, IRB, Manipur police and the local authorities was held at Newkaiphundai in Manipur's Tamenlong district. Its main objective was to provide better security to people for pacing up development, prevent extortions and kidnapping.
