Dibrugarh: A gang of robbers on Tuesday robbed more than Rs 45 lakh 61 thousand from two ATMs in Assam's Dibrugarh.
As per reports, the robbers looted the two ATMs belonging to SBI and PNB and also burnt down the ATM machines in a bid to destroy evidence. The two ATMs were filled with cash of Rs 14.8 lakh and Rs 30.51 lakh respectively.
Reportedly, the robbers used gas cutters and other equipment to carry out the robbery.
The entire took place yesterday at midnight at about 2.15 am.
Speaking on the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bitul Chetia informed that an investigation is underway.
" We received information stating that the ATM in Barbarua caught fire and following which the fire brigade rushed to the spot and later it was revealed that ATM cash has been stolen using gas-cutters from the devices", Chetia said.
"Similarly, Punjab National Bank's ATM also got robbed and after stealing the money the robbers set the ATM on fire. This style of ATM robbery was recorded the first time in upper Assam," he added.
In January this year, a team of unidentified men had robbed more than Rs 40 lakh from two State Bank of India SBI ATMs in Assam's Bongaigaon district.
The ATMs had roughly Rs 40 lakh in cash, which was stolen using gas-cutters from the devices.
According to the authorities, the offenders had removed the CCTV wires before the crime. They went on to say that when the cops came, the thieves had already made off with the money and had closed the ATM's shutters during the event, making it hard for the cops to apprehend them.
In a similar incident, a gang of robbers from Ghoramara was apprehended by Dispur Police on Sunday night.
Six thieves were apprehended, one of them was a juvenile. Rohima Begum, Falu Ali, Sukrang Ali, Sanidus Ali, and Majom Ali are the names of the apprehended suspects.
