GUWAHATI: In yet another grim incident at a Jal Jeevan Mission project site in Assam, a worker named Hemraj from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, lost his life due to electrocution. The tragedy unfolded in Bilasipara, Dhubri district, when Hemraj came in contact with a high-voltage electric wire while on duty, resulting in his instantaneous death.
The incident has sparked allegations of negligence on the part of both the contractor and the engineers involved in the project. This unfortunate event is part of a disturbing pattern of fatal accidents at Jal Jeevan Mission sites, intensifying worries about safety standards and the protection of workers.
Notably, in Golaghat, three workers suffered serious injuries when an under-construction water tank of the Jal Jeevan Mission project collapsed suddenly. The injured workers were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, in Gogamukh, two workers met a tragic end after being electrocuted by an 11,000-volt electric wire while installing an electric post at the Mingmang site.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a worker's accidental fall from an under-construction water tank at the Nawboicha project site in Lakhimpur district in October, resulting in the worker, Nitu Bordoloi from Morigaon district, losing his life. Similarly, in September, two workers lost their lives after accidentally falling into a deep water-filled tank at the Hatichong locality project site in Nagaon district.
The recurring nature of these accidents raises serious concerns about the safety protocols and working conditions at Jal Jeevan Mission project sites in Assam. The tragic loss of lives and injuries underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive review of safety measures, proper training for workers, and strict adherence to protocols by contractors and engineers.
As the incidents continue to pile up, the authorities must address these issues promptly to ensure the well-being and safety of the workers involved in the Jal Jeevan Mission projects. The community, the government, and project stakeholders must collaborate to implement stringent safety measures and prevent further tragedies at these critical development sites.
