GUWAHATI: In connection with egregious irregularities and a scam involving the school's Mid Day Meal (MDM), Neena Majumdar, the headmistress of Khusurabari High School, and Mintu Saha, a businessman from Mazbat under the Mazbat police station in the Udalguri district, were detained and put in jail.
Sources claim that after smelling rat in the rice distributed under the MDM system of the school, the guardians and members of the school management committee filed a police report at the Mazbat police station, and the headmistress admitted to the crime.
According to the FIR, the police detained the head mistress on April 5 in connection with the 35/23 case, and Mintu Saha, the businessman, was detained on April 6 regarding the same case.
Before this, the Khusurabari High School management committee and guardians performed an investigation at the Mazbat cooperative society, where the school head acquired the rice under the MDM plan and discovered the egregious anomalies.
After admitting the guilt, the school's head made a vow to return the remaining rice sacks to the institution. A memo to this effect was delivered to the deputy commissioner of Udalguri district on March 30. Meanwhile, the school's guardians and management committee demanded either to suspend the school head or to transfer her immediately.
On April 5, investigators from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption detained a Sub Inspector in Nagaon, Assam, while he was accepting bribe money. This was part of the state's unprecedented anti-corruption campaign.
During a late-night operation carried out by the anti-corruption squad, the Nagaon Police Station SI was allegedly discovered collecting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant in exchange for freeing him from an old case that was still outstanding.
The identified SI was Suruzul Haque, who only had a month left to retire from the position.
