GUWAHATI: According to a top official on Thursday, the seven associates of extremist preacher Amritpal Singh—including his uncle—detained at Dibrugarh Central Prison are housed in different cells and are constantly monitored by CCTV.
He said that the security of the entire jail complex had been stepped up and that the seven "Waris Punjab De" (WPD) members' health was being monitored on a daily basis. According to the official, the seven have beds, mattresses, and televisions in their cells.
The official stated that four extra CCTV cameras have been placed inside the jail, while all other broken cameras have been either replaced or fixed.
According to a jail official, the CRPF, Assam Police officers, and prison guards have been tasked with maintaining the jail's inner security, while a team of the elite Black Panther Assam Police commandos has been assigned to patrol the facility's perimeter.
He claimed that CCTVs were installed along the jail's whole exterior wall.
On Wednesday, the jail's security setup was evaluated by the Inspector General of Police (law and order). As opposed to regular convicts, NSA captives have a specialized security system, according to Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswait Pegu on Wednesday.
Since March 19, when the Punjab police initially transferred four members of the group here, a multi-tier security mechanism has been put in place at the jail.
Tuesday saw the detention of three more people under the National Security Act (NSA), including the preacher's uncle, Harjit Singh, who was transported to Dibrugarh, some 2500 kilometers away from Punjab.
Daljeet Kalsi, Basant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bhukanwala, Bhagwant Singh alias "Pradhan Mantri" Bajeka, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, and Gurinder Pal Singh are the other members housed at the prison.
Recently, the Punjab Police carried out an extensive raid in the northern state and detained a number of Amritpal Singh supporters.
