KOKRAJHAR: At a time when the Government of India has reformed the education system with the New Education Policy, the students of Adarsh Vidyalaya (Central Model School) of Kokrajhar are getting only 50% of classes in a year due to shortage of benches and desks for the past three years.

The classes of Kokrajhar Adarsh Vidyalaya from Class I to Class III and from Class VI to Class VIII started since the last three years but the students can attend classes on every alternate day due to lack of benches and desks. The parents and guardians have high hopes that their children will get affordable and quality education in the school but the lack of seating arrangements over the last three years has brought disillusionment.

Sharing his concern with The Sentinel, a guardian of a student of the school, Rongjalu Brahma said it is unfortunate that three years had elapsed but there were no sufficient seating arrangements for the students in the school since the beginning and students from classes from I to III and classes VI to VIII are attending classes on alternate days only. He also said most of the guardians were worried about their children as they are getting only 50% working day classes in a year, which was a matter of great concern.

Echoing the same worry, Mujnu Narzary, another guardian, said the school authority had informed them that the classes were scheduled on every alternate day for the students due to shortage of sufficient benches and desks for the last three years. She quoted the principal as saying that the allotted benches and desks for Kokrajhar Adarsh Vidyalaya were diverted to somewhere in Mizoram and as a result, the school authority was compelled to take the decision of taking classes on alternate days. She also said the school authority had been telling the guardians that the sufficient bench and desks would arrive soon. Losing confidence in the assurance of the school authority, she questioned as to why a Central Government-sponsored school like Adarsh Vidyalaya had such shortcomings on basic requirements.
