SILCHAR: Silchar Medical College and Hospital hit the headline for all wrong reasons as an Inspector of Drugs was brutally assaulted by a group of junior doctors. Bonrai Rogmai, the Inspector of Drugs was later admitted to the surgery department for treatment. SMCH had suspended Anurag Dey, a junior doctor for assaulting a government official inside the medical campus. However a source in the SMCH, however, claimed that Rongnai first slapped a junior doctor after a heated altercation over a medical report. Dr Bhaskar Gupta, the in-charge Principal of the SMCH said, Rongmai visited the hospital on Monday to meet a close relative who was admitted for dialysis. What led to the unpleasant incident was being probed into, Dr Gupta said.

Rongmai on the otherhand claimed that he was misbehaved by a junior doctor even after he introduced himself as an officer of the health department. As he protested, a group of at least 20 junior doctors took him to a room and started beating him. Even they attacked him with a sharp object on his forehead which eventually required stitching, Rongmai alleged.

The SMCH source on the other hand alleged that it was Rongmai who first slapped a junior doctor in the medicine department. The incident triggered much tension as the junior doctors teamed up to retaliate. Later SMCH Vice principal Dr Abhijit Swamy and Deputy Superintendent Dr Bikash Shandilya rushed to the spot and pacified the irritated junior doctors. Rongmai was shifted to the surgery department for treatment.
