SILCHAR: Though a group of students tendered unconditional apology to Superintendent of Police Nomal Mahatta for their unruly behaviour with the police and administration, the Silchar NIT imbroglio does not seem to die down soon.

Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Saturday night in a message instructed the local administration to deal with the situation with a firm hand. On the other hand, a group of teachers of the premiere institute had reportedly informed the authority that they would not risk their lives and from Monday they would not attend the classes until the students who vandalized the house of the Dean Academics were punished. However, the Director of the institute reportedly assured the faculty security. Meanwhile, the students brought out a candle march blaming the NIT administration for the suicide of their fellow student.

On Friday evening, Koj Bokar, a fifth semester B Tech student, was found hanging inside his room in hostel number 7. This triggered protests by the students who pointed fingers at B K Roy, the Dean Academics. The students alleged that Roy misbehaved with Bokar which led him to take such a fatal step. The students vandalized the house of Roy and damaged his vehicles. Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, SP Mahatta tried to pacify the students but they demanded immediate justice for their departed fellow student. At midnight, police gatecrashed to enter the campus, resorted to lathicharge to disperse students, who in retaliatory move, threw bottles to the police, even hitting the SP. At around 1.30 am, Dean Roy was rescued.

Meanwhile, Roy, while speaking to this correspondent, said that Bokar could not clear a single paper in his first semester examination and as per rule, prior to admission in the fifth semester, students had to clear all the first semester papers. Bokar got re-admission in the first semester one-and-half months back, Roy clarified. He further claimed that he had not met Bokar the day he committed suicide. Hence mentally harassing the student was out of question, he argued.

Father of Bokar, meanwhile reached Silchar and received the mortal remains of his son. They are from Arunachal Pradesh.
