GUWAHATI: Popular singer of Assam Angarag Mahanta who is popularly known as 'Papon' has now turned into a filmmaker.
The singer has announced that he is working on two films simultaneously. Both the films in the making will be on the North East.
Papon has been working on these films, namely 'The Land of the Sacred Beats' and 'The Mystical Brahmaputra - A Musical Story' for the past four years.
Sharing about the films, the popular singer said, "Everyone knows my love towards India, and especially the Northeast. I feel responsible to take the Northeast to the rest of the world."
Hoping that his films will be not only act towards boosting tourism and culture in the region but also present its stories, Papon said that he and his team has been travelling extensively for researching and shooting for the films.
He said, "The experience of making films like this is life-changing. We have been travelling for years for research and shooting. I hope through this film we are not only able to boost tourism and culture but also promote its beautiful stories."
It may be mentioned here that Papon was invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival as the Cultural Ambassador of Assam. During the event, the teasers of his productions were released.
The teasers were unveiled at the India Pavilion at the March du Film at Cannes for celebrating films with roots in Assam.
Notably, while Papon produced the films, they are directed by Parasher Baruah.
It is learnt that both of them have been travelling across the North East for capturing its diversity, livelihood, crafts, arts and above all the stories of the region.
Earlier on Thursday, Papon celebrated his 47th birthday with his fans and well-wishers wishing him.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also wished the playback singer on his birthday. In a tweet, the Assam CM said, "Heartiest birthday greetings Papon! I pray to Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev to bless you with good health and a long life so that you continue to entertain everyone with your wonderful music."
