GUWAHATI: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi apologises for Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent tweet to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Barack Obama. Akhil Gogoi posted a video apologising in English to Obama, calling Himanta's claims "nonsense."

Akhil posted a video in his social media account and said, “Being an ordinary Assamese citizen, I am ashamed that my chief minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, spoke about Barak Obama in a communalizing, twisted, and racist manner. Himanta Biswa Sarma frequently comments on such communally warped statements, thus as his brother and a fellow Assam Assembly member, I am apologising on his behalf to accept forgiveness for his absurd remark.”

After a journalist cited former US President Barack Obama's comment about "safeguarding the Muslim minority in a majority Hindu India," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stirred up controversy on June 23 by joking that Assam police were en route to Washington to arrest Obama.

In response to the journalist, Sarma stated that India has many "Hussain Obamas" and that taking care of them takes precedence over visiting Washington.

His remarks come only hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that "there is no discrimination in India" based on caste or religion during a news conference at the White House.

In an interview with a leading news channel on June 22, former US President Barack Obama recommended that President Joe Biden bring up the subject of minorities' protection in India during their meeting with PM Modi.

In March, on the opening day of the legislative assembly's budget session, Sivasagar MLA and leader of the Raijor Dal Akhil Gogoi launched an onslaught against the Assam administration. Akhil Gogoi continued by referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the two "Hitlers" of India, claiming that the government has consistently attempted to bury the major concerns.
