Chandra Mohan Chhetri, one of the oldest social workers of the Udalguri district, passed away on August 28 at his Udalguri town residence. Late Chhetri was associated with majority of the old educational institutions of Udalguri area.

TANGLA: Chandra Mohan Chhetri, one of the oldest social workers of the Udalguri district, passed away on August 28 at his Udalguri town residence. Late Chhetri was associated with majority of the old educational institutions of Udalguri area.

Chhetri started his social life as the publicity secretary of the then Tezpur Gorkha Students’ Union way back in 1946 which was later extended as the Darrang Nepali Students’ Union and then again renamed as Darrang Gorkha Students’ Union. He was secretary of Udalguri post office demand committee way back in 1948. He was the founder and president of the then Golmagaon ME school in 1951 and also became a member of Udalguri Community project in 1953. He became the president of UdalguriViswashanti Nepali Mandir in 1954 and served as the vice president of Viswa Shanti Jajna held in 1956.

During the 1962 Indo-China war, Chhetri earned name and fame by supplying milk to the Indian army camping near the China border in Arunachal Pradesh. He also served as the vice president of Assam Gorkha Sammelan from 1976 to 1984. He was also closely related with the GolmagaonHigh and ME School as founder president, member of Udalguri HS and Udalguri Girls’ HS School and Udalguri College Governing Body.

Chhetri was engaged as one of the thousands of volunteers of the Volunteers’ force of Congress party in Tezpur in 1946, which is best known as August Kranti in the history of the freedom struggle of India.

Chhetri’s demise was widely condoled in all the educational institutions and Udalguri Municipal Board. His wife predeceased him six months ago. He leaves behind five sons and seven daughters and a large number relatives and well-wishers.
